way of the cross

way of the cross
 ; stations of the cross
 ; via crucis
This term refers to a form of prayer that apparently dates back to the fourteenth century. The way of the cross is a popular Lenten devotion that retraces the last events in the life of Jesus, from his condemnation by Pilate to his execution on Calvary. Most Catholic Churches have fourteen stations that are artistic representations of these final stages in the life of Jesus. (See CCC 2669)
